Hazeldene’s Chicken
The Hazeldene story began in 1938 when Jack Hazeldene left Bendigo to pilot Wellington bombers during World War II, leaving the task of caring for his 200 fowls to his 10 year old brother, Dick. Sadly, Jack was killed in the war and so, over the next 70 years, Dick devoted his life to turning those 200 fowls into a thriving poultry business.
Hazeldene's has its roots in Kangaroo Flat, a suburb of Bendigo in Central Victoria, where it began in various types of hand-built shedding and machinery.
Hazeldene's were the first in Victoria and the second nationally to become accredited for RSPCA Approved poultry. They have also been farming free range chicken for more than two decades under the FREPA accreditation, but free range goes deeper into their history than that. When they commenced farming operations at Lockwood back in the 1960s, they farmed all their chicken in free-range coops that were moved around open paddocks.
Today free range birds have the ability to forage naturally and instinctively amongst grasses, weeds, bushes and tress in a secure environment. Their diet is supported with locally-supples mutli-grains, blended with spice extracts and essential oils, creating happy, healthy and tasty chicken.
